上海,1938-1941。当世界大战在欧洲地区濒临爆发之际,遭纳粹迫害的犹太人逃亡至海外的机会也越见渺茫。当时,唯有还在中国的上海,无需任何文件证明就可让外藉人士迁入,於是,有超过两万名犹太人,一波波地涌入上海。从远离战火荼毒的「小维也纳」,到如集中营般拥挤脏乱的外来居民区。这群犹太人的海外流亡生涯,与这个异国城市的命运,也因此有了密不可分的关连。
本片藉由四位在上海倖晚於难的犹太人讲述亲身遭遇,佐以一些未曾面世的珍贵照片与纪录影片,以及薇婷与史托佛,这两个当时在上海经营贸易与出版的犹太人,所留下来的信件与刑物,垂建出这群犹太人的上海记忆。无论是透过单纯的访谈纪录,亦或是将文字转为画外音配合相关的影像呈现,都彷佛是要带领着观眾进入这些人物的脑海内,去见证他们在那残破岁月中的艰辛与无奈。
